Celebtrated poet, considered the pinnacle of persian literature

Came from Shiraz, Iran (his name ends with a Shirazi)
Influence in the west - went on to influence Thoreau, Goethe and Engels
People read his poems as a means of fortune telling on Nowruz (spring equinox) and Yalda (winter solstice)

His poems generally have a sense of irony, forming the basis for political and religious satire in Persia
